From Outrage to Participation
It's easy to believe that meaningful change belongs to someone else.
To governments.
To institutions.
To people with greater influence, greater resources, or louder voices.
Yet throughout history, many of the most significant cultural shifts have begun with a single question:
What if?
What if we refused to accept that the world had to remain the way it is?
What if we chose contribution over cynicism?
What if the future isn't shaped by waiting for better leaders—but by becoming better participants?
Those questions stayed with me throughout my conversation with Mark Mueller. After decades spent as a trial lawyer representing individuals, Indigenous communities, and families in landmark legal cases, Mark found himself standing at an unexpected threshold. Rather than dedicating the next chapter of his life solely to fighting injustice in the courtroom, he began asking how people from every discipline—scientists, artists, filmmakers, physicians, environmental advocates, and everyday citizens—might come together to create something larger than any one person or organization could accomplish alone.
What emerged from that inquiry became the Truth & Justice League.
Not simply as an organization, but as a growing network built around a powerful premise: positive action is contagious.
Throughout our conversation, Mark reflects on extraordinary legal victories, from protecting sacred Indigenous lands to helping change legal procedures for survivors of sexual assault. Yet what struck me most wasn't the cases themselves. It was the evolution they inspired. After decades confronting injustice, Mark's attention shifted toward something equally important—creating the conditions for people to connect, collaborate, and imagine new possibilities together.
Again and again, our conversation returned to the same invitation:
Rather than asking what's wrong with the world...
What if we asked what we're here to build?
Because perhaps justice isn't only something we fight for.
Perhaps it's something we create—together.
